AWS Cost Optimisation · UK

AWS cost optimisation: stop paying for AWS you don't use.

Most AWS bills include servers nobody uses, oversized databases and storage nobody remembers. KloudCare finds the waste with a free, read-only assessment, then helps you remove it safely, with savings estimates you can check against your bill.

Why AWS cost optimisation matters

AWS makes it easy to start things and easy to forget them. Nobody gets an alert when a test server is left running, so the bill grows quietly with every project.

29%

of cloud spend is wasted, according to organisations' own estimates, and the figure rose this year.

Every fix saves money every month

Removing an idle server or resizing a database is done once, and the saving repeats on every bill after that.

Savings go straight to the bottom line

Money not spent on unused AWS capacity can fund hiring, product work or a longer runway, without changing anything your customers see.

Waste and risk usually go together

Accounts with forgotten resources often have security and backup gaps too. The free assessment checks both in the same run.

What could waste be costing you?

Enter your monthly AWS bill to see what a typical level of waste adds up to over a year.

Possible waste per month£1,000
Possible waste per year£12,000
An illustration only, not a quote. 20% is a cautious starting point; the industry average estimate is 29%. Your real figure depends on your account, and the free assessment estimates it finding by finding.

Where AWS money usually goes to waste

The free assessment checks these areas automatically and estimates the monthly saving for each finding, using on-demand prices for your region.

Unused resources

Things you are paying for that nothing uses.

  • Unattached EBS volumes and unused Elastic IP addresses
  • Load balancers with no registered targets
  • Databases with no connections and rarely used Lambda functions

Oversized and idle compute

Capacity far larger than the workload needs.

  • EC2 instances with sustained low CPU, or larger than demand
  • RDS databases with low utilisation
  • ECS services running more tasks than they use

Network and storage

Costs that grow quietly in the background.

  • NAT Gateways with little traffic relative to their fixed cost
  • S3 buckets without lifecycle rules to expire or tier old data

Visibility and control

The basics that stop waste coming back.

  • Last month's spend by service, from Cost Explorer
  • Required cost-allocation tags such as Owner and Environment
  • Resources running in regions you did not expect

Every finding shows its evidence, such as the CloudWatch metrics and time period behind it, plus the recommended action and the risk of making the change. See a sample report.

How it works

Start free, and only go further if the numbers justify it.

Free assessment

Deploy the read-only template in your account and get a report with estimated monthly savings in about 10 minutes.

Free review call

30 minutes to go through the findings and agree which savings are safe and worth doing first.

Fixes

Fixed-price work to remove waste and right-size, tested outside production first, with nothing changed without your approval.

Keep it down

AWS Cost Watch re-runs the assessment every month, so new waste is caught early.

Beyond the automated checks

Some of the biggest savings need an engineer's judgement. A cost optimisation review or AWS Health Check also covers:

  • Savings Plans and Reserved Instances, sized to your steady usage
  • Data transfer and cross-AZ traffic costs
  • Storage classes, S3 Intelligent-Tiering and EBS volume types
  • Scheduling non-production environments outside working hours
  • Graviton and newer instance generations
  • AWS Budgets and cost anomaly alerts, so surprises are caught early

Frequently asked questions

Will the assessment change anything in our account?

No. The free assessment is read-only. It cannot change, stop or delete anything, and it never reads your files, databases or secrets. It runs in your own AWS account and the report stays in your private S3 bucket.

How much will we save?

It depends on your environment, so we never promise a figure before looking. The free assessment estimates monthly savings for each finding, using regional on-demand prices, and the review call turns those into a realistic plan.

Do you need access to our AWS account?

Not for the free assessment, which you run yourself. For a cost optimisation project, we use a read-only IAM role that you create and can remove at any time. Changes use a separate, time-limited role, only for the changes you approve.

Do you recommend Savings Plans or Reserved Instances?

Where they fit. We first remove waste and right-size, so you do not commit to paying for capacity you do not need, then recommend commitments based on your steady usage.

How much does a cost optimisation review cost?

A cost optimisation review is £395 to £750, depending on the size of the environment. The free assessment is free, and AWS Cost Watch keeps costs in check every month for £300.
